1 box chocolate cake mix
16 oz. Mrs. Richardson’s Hot Fudge Topping
16 oz. whipped topping such as Cool Whip
Rainbow sprinkles

Prepare cake according to box directions in a 9″ x 13″ pan. Cool cake completely, then remove from pan. Slice the cake in half horizontally, carefully remove the top half. Place the bottom half of cake on a serving platter and top with frozen yogurt. Freeze until frozen yogurt is firm, about one hour.

Remove the cake from the freezer and quickly spread the chocolate fudge topping in an even layer over the frozen yogurt layer. The fudge should be at room temperature, do not heat it up. Freeze until firm, at least four hours.

Health Benefits of Frozen Yogurt vs Ice Cream

April 29th, 2009

Yogurt Bar is delving into the classic case of the health benefits of ice cream versus frozen yogurt and want to share our conclusions. When considering the health benefits of frozen yogurt versus ice cream most people immediately look at fat and sugar content. It’s true, not all frozen yogurt is fat free and some can be high in sugar content, however there are several healthy frozen yogurts available, such as Yogurt Bar’s organic frozen yogurts that are non-fat and low calorie. But what about the additional health benefits of frozen yogurt? Surely fat and sugar content is not all there is to consider.

One major health benefit of all natural frozen yogurts is the probiotic content. Frozen yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures promotes better digestion. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is some evidence that specific probiotics are helpful for urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, may reduce the recurrence of bladder cancer and prevent and manage atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children. Probiotic content is good bacteria that your body needs that can boost the immune system, enhance digestion and is even believed to lower cholesterol levels. At Yogurt Bar we use Straus Creamery yogurt which maintains active live cultures and probiotics to make healthy frozen yogurt.

In addition to probiotic content, another health benefit of frozen yogurt over ice cream is the amount of lactose found in frozen yogurt appears to be more digestible than the lactose in milk commonly used to make ice cream. For people who are lactose intolerant, this is particularly important. Frozen yogurt contains enzymes that assist in breaking down dairy, allowing many people with lactose intolerance to enjoy frozen yogurt with little or no ill effects.

Our conclusion: frozen yogurt does have additional health benefits over ice cream including greater digestibility and the presence of probiotic cultures, as well as lower fat and sugar content. We invite you to come down to Yogurt Bar and taste the difference of a healthier frozen treat!

2 Pints Yogurt Bar raspberry frozen yogurt
1 ½ cups crushed chocolate wafer cookies
6 Tbsp. melted butter
1/3 cup toasted shredded coconut
1 cup fresh raspberries
Chocolate syrup

Mix together cookie crumbs, butter and coconut until well blended.  Press evenly into bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie plate; freeze until firm.

Using an electric mixer, mix on slow speed 1/2 cup fresh raspberries with Yogurt Bar raspberry frozen yogurt just until fruit is mixed in.  Return frozen yogurt mix to freezer until it regains firmness.  Use an ice cream scoop to fill pie shell with raspberry frozen yogurt mix, piling the scoops into a mound.  Freeze until firm, at least two hours.

Just before serving, remove pie from freezer.  Garnish with remaining fresh raspberries and drizzle with chocolate syrup.  Sprinkle with toasted coconut if desired.
